The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is- My Girl. My Girl is a cover of the hit song by The Temptations. It was written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White. The song written by the two members of The Miracles- was written as a tribute to Smokey’s wife at the time Claudette Rogers. The Temptations took the song to #1 and is their most popular song. For The Rolling Stones -it was released on their compilation album “Flowers.” The Stones recorded the song before Aftermath and Between The Buttons. The Stones My Girl is a little faster than The Temptations and it also seems lacking in comparison. Mick can’t nail those high notes like David Ruffin could.

  1. It must be really weird when someone writes a song about you, then later you break up, maybe you even hate each other, but you have to hear the song all the time on the radio. Not that that’s what happened with Smokey and his wife, but…just sayin’.

    • Interesting. I was reading of another similar song- relationship recently- trying to remember who it was -the artist- a famous song about an ex wife– oh it was Neil Young and the song he wrote about meeting his ex wife Peggi- who died recently. The song is Unknown Legend. The writer was wondering -when he does that song how does it make him feel? … I wonder how much $$$ Smokey made just off that song over the years…

  2. Well, that wasn’t awful. Jagger struggled a little with it.

I’m not a huge Stones fan. I lean more towards Zeppelin & The Who. But, as a package…an ensemble, they have made some great pieces over the years. But, Jagger by himself? He is quite the personality but, who told him he could sing? He just kind of rambles thru words, either talking or shouting.

I may be committing heresy but, there it is…

    • That’s what I was gonna say! Jagger isn’t the BEST singer on earth by a long shot. It’s his persona and charisma that gets the job done, I think!
Yeah, and situations like Han said above with Neil Young having a song about his ex-wife who is now dead. It’s got to be bittersweet and kinda painful, at least on some level, if/whenever he performs that song now…

    • I’d rather watch Jagger than hear him. He is definitely interesting.

The one that came to my mind was Layla. Then, I thought…Wonderful Tonight. Clapton is awash in Boyd memories, I’m sure.
