- HARRY NILSSON: PANDEMONIUM SHADOW SHOW: 1967: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Nilsson’s second album but first proper album and his debut on RCA. A mixture of originals and covers. The Beatles medley “You Can’t Do That” was a hit in Canada. You might know Cuddly Toy- a song Harry wrote for The Monkees. Without Her, Ten Little Indians, 1941 and It’s Been So Long are other favorites on this great pop music album. What an amazing singing voice he had at this point in his career. Beatles publicist Derek Taylor heard 1941 on his car radio and ordered a case of the record-sending them to among other industry people- The Beatles who would be wild about Harry.

- U2: HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB: 2004: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Won 9 Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. Oddly by this point in time a rock band had a hard time charting on the singles chart in the US- Vertigo peaked at #31. In Canada two singles went to #1 and two went to #2 on their singles chart. Best songs- Vertigo, City Of Blinding Lights, Miracle Drug, Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own, All Because Of You.

- AL GREEN: GREATEST HITS: 1975: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: A good way to recover from listening to the fiasco of The Kinks Preservation Act 2: Al Green was at the top of his game in the early to mid-70’s with a string of great singles. 15 songs on this greatest hits- Tired Of Being Alone, Let’s Stay Together, I’m Still In Love With You, You Ought To Be With Me etc..
You heard Harry sing ‘She Sang Hymns Out of Tune’. I can listen to that one over and over.
He had such a great voice-until he ruined it. That’s a great one too!
Hans, how did Nilsson ruin his voice? I will try to borrow this one from the library. I have the U2 but another one not listened to; maybe it needs a visit. Al Green was KING around here at the time of that album and before.
Nilsson was recording with John Lennon- and was having throat problems- and he ruptured his vocal chords and his voice was never the same.
so sad
he seemed on the road to self-destruction. very sad story. There is a great documentary on him i believe it’s titled- who is harry nilsson and why is everybody talking about him?–
Will try to find it, thanks for letting me know about the doc.
I found it in the library system. A sad story but an artist that needs to be remembered. The doc was very well made. I just started reading a biography on Harry.
Will be interested in hearing about the book.
