The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is– Back Street Girl. Written by the Jagger-Richards team Back Street Girl is song three on side one of Between The Buttons. In this song its not relationship problems with the girl- but a purely physical relationship with a lower class girl. A look at English society in the 60’s- middle- upper class views of someone he views as being a lower class. He just wants the physical relationship and nothing more. One of my favorites on Between The Buttons- interesting musically with Nick De Caro’s accordion, Jack Nitzsche on harpsichord and an excellent and memorable vocal performance by Mick and of course Keith on acoustic guitar and the ever talented musically- Brian Jones on vibraphone . In later interviews Mick Jagger was critical of the Between The Buttons album saying that Back Street Girl was the only song he liked from it. He was wrong of course it’s a great album.
This has long been one of my favorite Stones songs. It came to me on the American Stones album called “Flowers.”
How many acoustic waltz songs did the Stones ever do? Thanks for the reminder!
Excellent stew of beautiful music.
I just requested Aftermath and Between the Buttons from the library đŸ™‚
They are good ones!!
Never heard this one before. Very pretty and poignant. And, boy, brutally honest about what he wants. Better than empty promises, I guess….
