I read the news today- oh boy! It was a busy day in American sports- Sunday January 19, 1969-

  • Super Bowl III was last Sunday- the season for both the NFL and AFL would finish up today- The NFL Pro Bowl was a low scoring affair with the West beating the East by the score of 10-7. The game was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and two of the hometown stars walked away with the MVP awards- the Lineman of the Game went to Merlin Olsen of the Los Angeles Rams and the Back of the Game to Rams quarterback Roman Gabriel. Only 32,050 payed to see the game- the seating capacity of the stadium was 94,500.

  • In the AFL All- Star Game- a more exciting and higher scoring game- the West beat the East 38-25 at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida before 41,058. Kansas City’s quarterback Len Dawson was the offensive MVP and the defensive MVP was Houston linebacker George Webster.

  •  An all-time football great was born on this date 50 years ago. Junior Seau was born in Oceanside, California. Seau would become an All-American linebacker at Southern Cal before going on to a 20 season Hall of Fame career in the NFL. He was the first round number 5 overall pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1990. He played with the Chargers from 1990- 2002. He finished  his career with the Miami Dolphins 2003-2005 and New England Patriots 2006-2009. He was a 12 time Pro Bowler and was elected to the Professional Football Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility in 2015. Sadly, Seau committed suicide in May 2012. A study of Seau’s brain showed that he was suffering from CTE
