1969 Song of the Day is- “Letter To Hermione” by David Bowie. It is a track from his 1969 Space Oddity album. It was a letter- a farewell to a former girlfriend Hermione Farthingale. They had lived together the previous year in London. Bowie met her though his dance teacher- and Hermione would leave Bowie- for a dancer. The comedian Rick Gervais has said this is his favorite Bowie song and possibly his favorite song ever. That would certainly be an odd choice. I like the song but favorite Bowie? Favorite song ever? What?? Hermione Granger would be the most famous Hermione until Hermione Granger came along.
Shortly after Bowie’s passing three years ago- they tracked Hermione down and asked her about Bowie. Her response was classy-
“He was a lovely, kind, original, sweet person of whom I was — and still am — incredibly fond, and that is how I will remember him.’
Hermione Granger would be the most famous Hermione until Hermione Granger came along. Ah-hem.
Hermione’s Gilgold and Baddeley were quite popular actresses in the 40s-60s.
I have a vague recollection that she might have sung a verse in an Arnold Corns (one of his projects) song. Unfortunately the CD a Bowie fan ripped for me of AC rarities has suffered from oxidation and is almost unplayable.
Sounds like something Ricky Gervais would say. lol
Was listening to this album just yesterday while cooking. Really like wide eyed boy from free cloud… There’s a lot of good tunes on space oddity
