Han’s Worst Hits of the 70’s- today- “Torn Between Two Lovers”- by Mary MacGregor. Even Mary MacGregor herself admits she hates this song and it was her only hit song [unless you count Good Friend #39 in 1979 a hit} and her claim to fame.
Born Between Two Lovers was a hit in the winter of 1977. The song was written by Peter Yarrow [of Peter, Paul and Mary fame} and Philip Jarrell. The song describes a love triangle of course. MacGregor later said that the song ended up ruining her marriage- not that she was torn between two lovers- but it’s success- #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart and even a country music hit #3- and of course a #1 on the Easy Listening chart- kept her away from home touring and a distance grew between her and her husband.
All I know is- I may have found out one of the reasons I was so depressed during that period of my life. It was my first year of high school and I hated school that year. Every morning I had the same routine-{ I wrote about this when I featured I Like Dreamin’- by Kenny Nolan as one of the worst hits of the 70’s} I got up every morning and listened to the pop radio station for an hour before going to school. I still recall getting up at 6am.. leaving for the bus around 7- and catching the bus at 7:20. Anyway- my new discovery today is- in looking at the pop charts when this piece of garbage was #1 on the charts- no wonder I was depressed– now I remember. I haven’t thought of this song in years but at the same time this was a hit- I Like Dreamin’ was also a big hit. Every morning I would hear both of these songs. I had forgotten that fact. I Like Dreamin’ had stuck with me but I had forgotten Torn Between Two Lovers.

It is depressing. Even if she would have sung about Rainbows and happy things…it’s the dreariness of it.
Yes you got a point there- it’s not the words as much as the whole mood to the song. How did this become such a big hit? I have heard over the years- I Like Dreamin’ a number of times. I don’t think I’ve heard this song in 40 years.
I haven’t heard it either in at least 20 years…one consolation… they don’t wear it out!
Yes they are saving it up–maybe to torture future generations with it!
That and the other song every morning would seal the desolation for me lol
This is indeed a bad one, but after yesterday’s song, this one isn’t looking quite so bad. π
Telephone Man will be hard to top!
