1969 Song of the Day is- Pale Blue Eyes- by The Velvet Underground. Pale Blue Eyes was written by Lou Reed and was on The Velvet Underground’s self-titled third album. Reed wrote the song about his first love- Shelley Albin- who also happened to be married to another man at the time- and her eyes weren’t blue but hazel. I think it is the best song on the album- and a beautiful song- beauty in the same sentence as Lou Reed?
Over the years Pale Blue Eyes has been covered by many artists- most famously by R.E.M, Patti Smith, Counting Crows, Hole, and a host of others. The Killers played this song the evening of Lou’s death in concert as a tribute to him.
Without a doubt one of the finest songs ever written…for me that is
Great song from a great band that was here and gone too quickly.
Very true
Fantastic song. Love just about anything Lou Reed. I can’t decide which song I love more–Femme Fatale or Pale Blue.
I;ll go with Pale Blue Eyes but it’s a close call.
It is. Me too, I guess.
Where would we be without the VU? Well probably at the same place except it wuld have taken a little longer to have these dark images, fitting alng with the music. Lou Reed was such a perfectionist, he was a true artist and I insist on saying artist not only as a musician.
I agree with you on VU and Lou!
Lovely song. U2 uses that kind of lulling guitar to great effect also.
