The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is Under My Thumb. Under My Thumb was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and appears on their Aftermath album. This song has received a lot of criticism over the years because of its anti-feminist sentiments. The singer isn’t tossing this girlfriend aside but putting her under his thumb. Mick Jagger responding to the criticism has stated that in this song it’s not as one sided as it appears because he says the lyrics do say “under my thumb a girl who once had me down.” Musically the song is interesting due to Brian Jones playing the marimba which provides the main hook in the song and Bill Wyman playing his fuzzy bass. I always assumed the song was a hit single but it was just a popular album cut.
Under My Thumb also has an even darker history-it was the song that the band was finishing at the Altamont Festival in December 1969 when the Hells Angels killed an African American named Meredith Hunter as he approached the stage.
I’ve always liked this tune, though in the current political climate, I’m not sure the Stones are still performing it. No matter how Jagger has explained the lyrics, they were clearly written at a very different time.
That song can go both ways, as in it isn’t always the man who has the woman under his thumb. It can flip and then flip again in an unhealthy relationship. I love the song and think of my own thumb when I sing it lol.
I’ve always liked the song too- especially the music too it- sticks in my head.
There is a lot of power in that song.
At least “Wild Horses” can heal the wounds of hearing this.
I wonder how people are supposed to express thoughts opposite of whatever’s going on in today’s climate, though. Like, all songs, all stories, all expressions, all thoughts about women, other people, men, animals, politics and/or religion aren’t going to be positive and upbeat. It’s a razor’s edge to be able to express yourself truthfully without offending others. But without the opposite side being aired, we’d all just be grinning yes-men, wouldn’t we?
I totally agree. Everyone today is so sensitive.
