The Beatles Song Of The Day is “Day Tripper.” “Day Tripper” was one side of the fantastic Double A sided single with ‘We Can Work It Out.” John Lennon wrote most of the song with a little help from Paul McCartney. This is one great rock and roll song. John and Paul both said it was a ‘forced composition” to come up with a new single. “Day Tripper” hit #1 in the United Kingdom and #5 in the United States. The song was written after The Beatles had started to take LSD. John wanted to reflect the influence of the growing drug culture within a Beatles song. That riff is what you try to learn on guitar when you first start. Classic guitar riff.
That is one of the classic rock song openings.
Keith Richards is, of course, the king of riffs…but John came up with some great ones. Day Tripper, I Feel Fine, Yer Blues…my favorite is And Your Bird Can Sing. That riff is not easy and I don’t see how he came up with that.
One of my favorite non-hit songs by The Beatles- kind of gets lost among all the other great songs they did but I’ve always love that one.
The story Joe Walsh told about that song is fantastic. He said it took him a couple of weeks to learn and it was a pain but he finally got it. Later on when he met Ringo…Ringo told him that George and Paul or John double-tracked it on guitar….so Joe was playing both parts at the same time.
I hadn’t heard that story that is a good one!
I always heard it was about Marianne Faithfull and Mick Jagger…but then I heard it was about a comment Frank Sintra said.
I read that recently- can’t recall where- about And Your Bird Can Sing and Francis Albert.
I love both of these tunes. “Day Tripper” had one of their best guitar riffs!
