The Beatles on this date – June 10th, 1966 released one of my favorite singles. “Paperback Writer” would be the A-side and go to #1. It is a Paul McCartney written song- reportedly his aunt asked him if he was able to write a song that wasn’t about love. He had this in mind and was walking around the room when he saw Ringo Starr with a book in his hands. There it was. One of the main reasons this is my second favorite Beatles single [behind “Strawberry Fields Forever”/ “Penny Lane”} is how great these two songs sound. “Rain” written by John Lennon would peak at #23 on the charts. It features one of Ringo’s best performances. Listen to the drumming on this track. The song would have fit well on “Revolver.” a great psychedelic rock song. This single was released a couple months ahead of their great “Revolver” album but stood as singles, imagine a group having such strong material they didn’t add their singles on to the albums.
There are entirely too many silly love songs written by Paul McCartney,
This fact has somewhat tarnished his musical genius.
As big of a Beatles fan as I am- I am not crazy about any of their solo careers. Spotty.
