Clay Matthews Sr has died at the age of 88. Clay Matthews Sr. played with the San Francisco 49ers for four seasons in the 1950’s as a tackle. That was the beginning of a family football dynasty that continues to this day. He would have two sons who starred in the NFL- Clay Matthews a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons- a 4 time Pro Bowlers he played from 1978-96. There are those who believe he should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Another son Bruce Matthews played from 1983-91 for the Oilers/Titans franchise. A 14 time Pro Bowler- Bruce is in the Hall of Fame.
The third generation of Matthews- Bruce’s son Clay III is a pro bowl linebacker for the Green Bay Packers {Clay II and Clay III only father -son to both win the the defensive player of the week award. Another son Casey Matthews played in the NFL from 2011-2015.
Bruce Matthews son Kevin Matthews played in the NFL from 2010-2014 and another son Jake Matthews currently is playing for the NFL Champions Atlanta Falcons-since 2014.
Will there eventually be a 4th Matthews generation of NFL players? I certainly wouldn’t bet against it.
And what a dynasty they are!!
