On this day in 1792 the guillotine was used for the first time, in Paris, to execute highwayman Nicolas Jacques Pelletier. The guillotine is used to carry out executions by decapitation. The guillotine was most famously used in France during the French Revolution. The guillotine continued to be used in France over the years though. The last execution in France by guillotine was in 1977.
