The Astrodome-The 8th Wonder Of The World- Opens In Houston- This Day 1965

On this day in 1965 the Astrodome opened in Houston. The first indoor baseball game in major league history was played. At the time it opened the Astrodome was billed as “The Eighth Wonder of the World.” The original name was the Harris County Domed Stadium. The Astrodome cost $35 million to build. It was the home of the Houston Astros from 1965-2000. During my tour of MLB baseball stadiums in the early 1990’s I went to a game at the Astrodome. It was a very hot and humid day in Houston. Hanspostcard does not like it over 60 degrees. It was great to get indoors and out of the heat. Other than that I was not all that impressed with the Astrodome. It felt like watching a ballgame at a movie theater. I like the new Astros ballpark a lot better. Like a lot of things the Astrodome was cutting edge at the time it was built. Now the Astrodome just sits there, no longer used for anything. A lonely landmark.
