Carl Perkins-“The King Of Rockabilly” Born This Day 1932

Carl Perkins was born on this day in 1932. Carl Perkins was called the “King Of Rockabilly.” He recorded most famously for Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee. His most famous song was “Blue Suede Shoes.” A fellow named Elvis also recorded “Blue Suede Shoes” and his version became more famous, even though Perkins had the bigger hit with it. Perkins original went to #2 while Elvis was at #20. Perkins was a huge influence on a number of musicians. Paul McCartney even went as far as saying that without Carl Perkins there would have been no Beatles. George Harrison was a huge fan. The Beatles covered three of Carl Perkins songs “Matchbox”, “Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby” and “Honey Don’t.”  Carl Perkins died at age 65 in 1998 after suffering from throat cancer and several strokes. I remember seeing Steve Earle in concert a couple days after the death of Carl Perkins and he played “Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby” was a tribute.
