The Amercan League Begins Using The Designated Hitter- This Day 1973

A dark day in baseball history- on this day 1973 the American League began using the designated hitter. To this day the American League still uses the DH and the National League does not. I’ve always been against the DH- I think it takes a lot of the great strategy away from the game. The AL adapted it to get more offense into the game and also at that point in time the National League was the more dominate league and the more popular league.

Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees was the first DH. He came to bat against Boston Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant-and walked.
