Merle Haggard turns 76 today. If they had a Mount Rushmore of Country Music singers Merle Haggard would surely be on it. I would have to acknowledge Hank Williams as being the greatest country singer but my favourite to listen to is Merle. The others I’d put on Mount Rushmore would be of course Johnny Cash and “The Possum” George Jones.

Merle Haggard has had 38 #1 country songs. He has released a staggering amount of studio albums -76. His most famous song would have to be “Okie From Muskogee” which was kind of an anthem for some in the late 1960’s. “Okie” was a great song but my favourite Merle song I think is “Big City.”

An outstanding box set on Merle’s career “Down Every Road” is highly recommended.
