The Beatles Song Of The Day is “Day Tripper.” “Day Tripper” was one side of the fantastic Double A sided single with ‘We Can Work It Out.” John Lennon wrote most of the song with a little help from Paul McCartney. This is one great rock and roll song. John and Paul both said it was a ‘forced composition” to come up with a new single. “Day Tripper” hit #1 in the United Kingdom and #5 in the United States. The song was written after The Beatles had started to take LSD. John wanted to reflect the influence of the growing drug culture within a Beatles song. John said it ‘was just a rock and roll song, Day trippers are people who go on a day trip right? Usually on a ferryboat or something. But the song was kind of ..you’re just a weekend hippie. Get it? John Lennon:double-tracked vocal, rhythm and lead guitar/ Paul McCartney: double-tracked vocal and bass guitar/ George Harrison: lead guitar/ Ringo Starr: drums and tambourine. The song was recorded on October 16th, 1965 at Abbey Road. Producer: George Martin.
Rating “Day Tripper” on a scale of 1 to 5 stars ***** a classic.
- The “We Can Work It Out”/”Day Tripper” being released as a Double A single came about over arguing over which song would get the A-side. “We Can Work It Out” was scheduled to be the A side but John wanted “Day Tripper” so they just made it a Double A. As much as I love “Day Tripper”- I think “We Can Work It Out” is the better song.
- According to John’ friend Pete Shotton, the original lyric went “She’s a prick teaser’ obviously in 1965 that wasn’t going to come out so it was changed to ‘ She’s a big teaser.”
- The Beatles played “Day Tripper” every night on their final tour in 1966 including the last show at Candlestick Park, San Francisco.
- “Day Tripper” is ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine’s “The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs” at #39 and in Spignesi and Lewis’ 100 Best Beatles Songs” at #32.
- Length of song: 2:50.
