Texas Western Becomes The First College Team To Win NCAA Championship With An All-Black Starting Line-up -This Day 1966

On this day in 1966 Texas Western {now UTEP} defeated the University of Kentucky to win the NCAA College Basketball Championship. The game was played at Cole Field House in College Park, Maryland. What made this historic is Texas Western under coach Don Haskins was the first team to win the title fielding an all-black starting line-up.  A pretty good movie was made of this in 2006 “Glory Road.” What made the victory even more special-Kentucky’s coach was Adolph Rupp-one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history but also a racist who refused to recruit black players.
