The Greatest Athlete To Wear #48 is the 38th POTUS Gerald R. Ford.
Notable #48’s. If I were counting race car drivers in this a clear pick would be Jimmie Johnson but I do not count them. There is no real stand out among the #48’s. Waite Hoyt was a Hall of Fame pitcher back with the Yankees in the time of Ruth. Ramon Martinez had some fine years mainly with the Dodgers-but is better known now as Pedro’s older brother. Sudden Sam McDowell had some outstanding years early in his career and had Hall of Fame talent before the bottle got the best of him. Ralph Garr was a pretty good outfielder for the Braves in the 1970’s and was nicknamed “The Roadrunner.” Andy Pafko was one of the Brooklyn Dodgers “Boys of Summer.” Rick Reuschel was a fine pitcher in the 70’s and 80’s for a few ballclubs. In football the Dallas Cowboys fullback Darryl Johnston cleared the way for many an Emmitt Smith run.
The Greatest Athlete To Wear #48 is Jerry Ford. Jerry Ford was an above-average center-linebacker for the University of Michigan in the 1930’s He was the team MVP in 1934. He turned down the NFL for better things. He was also the most athletic of our POTUS. He was an avid golfer, tennis player and skiier. He would top two lists of POTUS- the most athletic president and from most accounts the nicest man to ever become POTUS. Without a clear #48- I am going with Jerry Ford.
