The Greatest Athlete To Wear #49 {Ron Guidry}

The Greatest Athlete To Wear #49 is Ron “Gator” Guidry.

Notable #49’s- the great Satchel Paige wore #49 when he was with the St.Louis Browns. Bobby Mitchell was an outstanding running back-receiver back in the 1960’s. Larry Dierker one of the greatest pitchers in Houston Astro history and later a successful manager for them wore #49. Tim Wakefield the knuckleballer for the Red Sox who seemed to have pitched forever was a 49. Ron Dibble who was a key member of “The Nasty Boys” bullpen of the Reds back in the 1990’s- the greatest bullpen in baseball history wore 49.

The Greatest #49 is Ron Guidry who pitched his entire career with the Yankees. He had a couple great great seasons where he was  “Louisiana Lightening” his best season was 1978. He was an obscene 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA and 248 K’s that year. He never reached those heights again-not many have. He was one of those borderline Hall of Fame types who didn’t quite make it to Cooperstown-at least not yet. He had an oustanding career though.
