The First Mother’s Day Is Celebrated- This Day 1908 In Grafton, West Virginia

On this day in 1908 the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna Jarvis held a service of commemoration for her mother. Jarvis would campaign to have Mother’s Day a National Holiday and she would succeed in her effort. In 1914 POTUS Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day a National Holiday to be celebrated the second Sunday in May. By the time she died in 1948 Anna Jarvis was disappointed in what the holiday had become. She felt it had become too commercialized.
