The Greatest Athlete To Wear #58- {Jack Lambert}

The Greatest Athlete To Wear #58 is Jack Lambert- the Pro Football Hall of Fame middle linebacker from the Pittsburgh Steelers dynasty of the 1970’s.

Notable #58’s- Derrick Thomas the Hall of Fame linebacker from the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame receiver Mac Speedie. Other #58’s- linebackers Peter Boulware, Wilbur Marshall, Wally Hilgenberg and Carl Banks all who had outstanding careers.

Jack Lambert is an easy choice at #58. He joins his teammate Jack Ham who was the greatest #59. Jack Lambert may not have been the greatest middle linebackers ever but he was certainly in the discussion. He was intense. During his 11 year career all played with the Steelers [1974-84} he was a Pro Bowler 9 times. A member of the all 1970’s and all 1980’s teams. Jack Lambert was probably the most popular Steeler of those great Steelers 70’s teams which won 4 Super Bowls. His personality on the field was nasty. Off the field he was quiet. As long as he was on the field no one pushed the Steelers around. As nasty and intense as he was, he played under control. I don’t remember him committing a lot of stupid penalties. He was outstanding from the first game of his career back in 1974 and he only got better.  He was the 1974 Defensive Rookie of the Year and the 1976 Defensive Player of the Year. The Steelers do not retire uniform numbers but no one has wore #58 since he retired.
