The Tootsie Roll was invented on this day 1896 by Leo Hirschfeld. He named the candy after his daughter Clara whose nickname was “Tootsie.” The Tootsie Roll” was the first penny candy to be individually wrapped. Today more than 64 million “Tootsie Rolls” are made daily. Also the first “Tootsie Roll” Leo Hirschfeld produced is exactly like the ones they produce today.
