Michael Jordan turns 50 today. Most consider Jordan the greatest basketball player ever. I am in the minority myself, I would vote for Bill Russell as the greatest basketball player ever. Jordan did it all. I think it’s a joke that today people are claiming Lebron James is better or Kobe Bryant was. I am no big fan of Jordan but those guys are not greater than Michael Jordan was.
Jordan had a great 3 year career at North Carolina. As great as he was at Carolina though I don’t think many saw what was coming when he went to the NBA. I thought he would be a superstar no question but never thought he would be a guy who was considered the greatest player ever. The old joke was the only person who could hold Michael Jordan under 20 points was his college coach-Dean Smith.
Jordan was the 3rd player taken in the 1984 NBA draft. I can see Houston taking Hakeem Olajuwon ahead of him. Olajuwon ended up a Hall of Famer but Portland really blew it taking Sam Bowie. I say that not in hindsight either. Bowie at the University of Kentucky missed two seasons with injuries. He would have an injury prone career in the NBA. It was predictable at the time what this would be the case. A guy with great potential who couldn’t stay healthy. History would repeat itself decades later when Portland passed on this Durant kid you may have heard of who plays for Oklahoma City and took Odom from Ohio State.
Jordan led the Bulls to 6 NBA Championships, he was a 6 time NBA Finals MVP.A 14 time All-Star, 5 time MVP, a 10 time scoring champion…the honors go on and on.
Sadly, he seems to be someone who can’t move on. He’s 50. He’s not 25 or 30. The basketball playing is over Michael. I never cared for the guy. He was a great competitor and a great player. I’ve not heard much good about the man though. But he was a great great player and as I was saying earlier- comparing James or Bryant to Jordan is a joke. It’s not even close- Jordan is superior.
Side note- most people consider Jordan the greatest basketball player ever and JimBrown the greatest football player ever- they share the same birthdate.
