The Greatest Athlete To Wear #78 is NFL Hall of Fame tackle Anthony Munoz.
Picking the greatest #78 wasn’t easy. There are a number of outstanding #78’s. Notable #78’s- the runner-up is Bruce Smith who in his 15 NFL seasons was a 11 time Pro Bowler. He played most of his career with the Buffalo Bills. One of the greatest defensive ends who ever played. He’s in the Hall of Fame. He is the all-time leader in sacks. Art Shell is a Hall of Fame tackle from the Raiders. He played on what is probably the greatest offensive line in NFL history. 4 of the 5 are in the Hall of Fame. Bobby Bell was Hall of Fame linebacker for the Chiefs in the late 1960’s-70’s. A great player and all around athlete. Jackie Slater played forever with the Rams-he is one of two players who played 20 straight seasons with the same team. He’s in the Hall of Fame. Bubba Smith was a fearsome defensive end during his career that was cut shot by injury. He is the greatest player in Michigan State football history.
My selection is Anthony Munoz because of his dominance. It is hard to rank offensive linemen but he may have been the greatest tackle in the history of the sport. He played his entire career with Cincinnati. It is no coincidence that the Bengals went to their only two Super Bowls while Munoz played for them. He played 13 NFL seasons and made the Pro Bowl 11 times. The NFL Network ranked him as the #12 greatest player in NFL history. He is the highest ranked offensive lineman on the list.
