The Greatest Athlete To Wear #82 is Pro Football Hall of Famer Raymond Berry.
There are a number of outstanding receivers in football who wore #82 but none come close to Raymond Berry one of the finest receivers to ever play the game. The combination of Johnny Unitas to Raymond Berry is one of the best in football history.
Other notable #82’s. John Stallworth is a Pro Football Hall of Famer from the great Steeler teams of the 1970’s. Jimmy Smith, Dante Hall, Vance Johnson, Mike Quick, James Jett and John Taylor who will be remembered catching the winning touchdown pass for the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIII and playing second fiddle to Jerry Rice wore #82. Ozzie Newsome a Hall of Fame tight end with the Browns also wore #82. In hockey Martin Straka had a fine career in the NHL.
Raymond Berry though to me is an easy pick [over Stallworth and Newsome} Raymond Berry was a 2oth round selection by the Baltimore Colts in the 1954 NFL draft. During his college career had SMU he had only caught 33 passes. They just didn’t throw the ball much as SMU in those days. Berry would play his entire career with the Colts from 1955-67. He made the Pro Bowl 6 times. He was known for running perfect routes and having great hands. If Raymond Berry dropped a pass it was a very very rare happening. Berry caught 632 passes in his career for 68 touchdowns. The Sporting News ranked him in 1999 as the 40th greatest player in NFL history.
