The greatest athlete to wear #84- is Randy Moss.
Some outstanding wide receiver/tight ends have worn the number 84 in NFL history. Randy Moss may think he is the greatest receiver ever but he’s not in the same league as Jerry Rice. He is the greatest receiver to wear #84.
Other notable #84’s are the Sharpe brothers- Sterling Shape who was on his way to a Hall of Fame career before he suffered a career ending injury and Shannon Sharpe who was a Hall of Famer with the Broncos and Ravens. Billy “White Shoes” Johnson was an exciting player with the Oilers in the 1970’s and had one of the greatest touchdown dances ever. Herman Moore was an outstanding receiver for the Lions, Joey Gallaway had fine career mostly with the Seahawks.Brent Jones and Jay Novacek were good NFL tight ends.
I think the number comes down to either Moss or Shannon Sharpe. Moss will be a Hall of Famer. He is one of the most gifted if not the most gifted receiver I’ve seen. Too bad there were a few years in his career where he just didn’t seem very motivated [his years with the Oakland Raiders} but Moss was a game breaker. Moss set the record for receiving touchdowns in a season with New England in 2007 with 23. He is second on the all time reception touchdown list with 156. He’s been selected to 7 Pro Bowls. He will be turning 36 in a week. He’s about at the end of the line.
