Some fine football players have wore #85, I would rank the greatest athlete to wear #85 as Jack Youngblood who was a star defensive end for the Los Angeles Rams and a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Notable #85’s- Nick Buoniconti, the biggest name in the Miami Dolphins “No Name Defense” of the early 1970’s is a close runner up to Youngblood. Buoniconti is a Pro Football Hall of Famer also. Receivers Isaac Curtis, Mel Gray, Del Shofner, Mark Duper, Wesley Walker, Derrick Mason and Max McGee, the Green Bay Packer receiver who starred in Super Bowl I-he scored the first ever Super Bowl touchdown also deserve mention. Lamar Lundy was a member of the Los Angeles Rams “Fearsome Foursome” of the 1960’s also wore #85. In hockey Petr Klima scored over 300 NHL goals during his career.
Jack Youngblood was a tough guy. He played the 1979 post-season on a broken leg.He played his entire 14 year career with the Rams. He was a 5 time Pro Bowl selection. His number is retired by the Rams. Youngblood was one of the top handful of defensive ends of the 1970’s and early 1980’s. He was the anchor of the Rams defense. They had one of the best defensive end tandums with Fred Dryer on the other side.
