On this day in 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and pilot Roger Peterson were all killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. Buddy Holly who would be one of the most influential artists in rock and roll history was only 22 years old at the time of his death. I have always tried to imagine what Buddy Holly’s career would have been like had he not died in that crash. Its amazing that someone only 22 years old who hadn’t been recording that long left behind so many great songs.
Don McLean in the early 1970’s would write a song “American Pie” in which he sang about “the day the music died” which was the day Buddy Holly was killed. McLean would dedicate the album to Buddy Holly.
Buddy Holly was one of the first year inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I so love Buddy Holly. Small planes a danger to anyone that flies them and these poor musicians. Glenn Miller too,and more. Thanks. k.
If you ever stay over in Lubbock – no one knows why you might wish to – stay at La Quinta motel and you can ask for the room next to the Buddy Holly Memorial.
Used to be there on the road every other week and always took that room. Woke up in the morning with the birds chirping and Buddy Holly’s statue outside the window.
I was on a cross country vacation 20 years ago and made my way through west texas just to go to Lubbock and see the statue etc.. I wish i had known about that room..heck maybe the motel wasn’t even there then.. Buddy Holly Lives.
