The Legendary John Belushi was born on this day in 1949. John Belushi was a funny guy. He was one of the big stars of Saturday Night Live back in the mid to late 1970’s which to me was the golden age of the show. I couldn’t even tell you one person on the show today. Back then it was must see television every Saturday Night. I didn’t miss a show during those years. To me John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were the best [and Bill Murray wasn’t bad either but they were all pretty funny]
I can recall where I was on March 5th, 1982. I was sitting in traffic that evening with a group of friends. We were going to the Eastern Eight basketball tournament at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. The radio was on and they came on with a bulletin from Los Angeles. All they said was comedian John Belushi was found dead in a hotel room. All of us immediately speculated the cause. John Belushi was 33 years old. He was a guy who seemed to live life to the extremes. It had to be drugs. It was.
The two Belushi movies I loved were “Animal House” which goes on my Mount Rushmore of funniest movies..[along with “Blazing Saddles, Life of Brian and….. thinking of the 4th..} and the underrated “Blues Brothers” movie. John Belushi was funny without saying a word. All you had to do was look at him and you wanted to laugh. It’s hard to believe that he has been dead nearly as long as he had lived. Belushi had once said he wasn’t going to live to see 3o. He did but not much longer.
