Folk singer Richie Havens who in my opinion stole the show at the famous Woodstock Concert in 1969 turns 72 today. Havens was the first performer at Woodstock and he played a three hour set because other artists hadn’t arrived yet. This was the turning point in his career. Having ran out of tunes to play he improvised on the old spiritual “Motherless Child” which became “Freedom.” Richie Havens only Top 40 hit was his cover of The Beatles “Here Comes The Sun” Havens retired from touring last year due to health concerns. I have a friend who promoted a concert with Richie Havens years ago and he said that Havens was a wonderful person.
