“American Pie” By Don McLean- Reaches #1 On American Pop Charts-This Day 1972

On this day in 1972 Don McLean’s “American Pie” reached #1 on the Top 100 Pop Chart in the United States. It would stay at #1 for 4 weeks and become one of the iconic hits of the early 1970’s. The songs length 8:33 is the longest song ever to hit #1. On the single there wasn’t enough room for the song so it took up both sides. The better choice would be to have bought the excellent album which includes Don McLean’s great song about the artist Vincent Van Gogh “Vincent”

    • That song is so long..but you never notice how long it actually is. I’ve heard it a thousand times and I am always fascinated. A sign of a great song!
