The First Super Bowl- Green Bay Packers vs Kansas City Chiefs -Played This Day 1967

46 years ago today the Green Bay Packers from the National Football League met the Kansas City Chiefs from the upstart American Football League in what would be called the Super Bowl. At the time it was called the NFL-AFL Championship Game. The first Super Bowl was nothing like the Super Bowl is today-the biggest sporting event in America. The game was played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Packers had a lot of pressure on them to win this one. The NFL was thought to be far superior to the upstart AFL and a loss would not only be devastating but would have seriously changed how the Green Bay Packers dynasty was viewed.

The score was only 14-10 Packers at halftime but the Packers came out in the second half and put it away winning 35-10. Bart Starr was the MVP of the game[and the MVP of Super Bowl II also} Super Bowl I was the only Super Bowl that wasn’t a sellout. The halftime consisted of college bands not the big rock group concerts that they have today. In many ways I think it was better back then. Back then it was a game, now its an event. I have no memory of the first two Super Bowls. I know I watched the second one, I remember where I was and being excited about it but I can’t recall the game. I haven’t missed one since. The best Super Bowls? The six my Steelers have won.
