The Human Be-In took place on this day in 1967 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This event lauched the so-called “Summer of Love in San Francisco, especially in the Haight-Ashbury section of the city. Somewhere between 20 and 30 thousand people showed up to this event. Music was provided by local bands- Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company the Quicksilver Messenger Service. None of these bands were famous yet. Drugs were flowing freely. The Hells Angels were there and Timothy Leary told the crowd to ” turn on, tune in and drop out” I was only 6 years old at this time so I wasn’t there. If I had been of age that would have been the last place I would have wanted to be.
