On this day in 1968 Johnny Cash performed what would be one of his most famous concerts- at Folsom State Prison in California. The album  “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” would be released in May of 1968. Johnny Cash had been interested in performing at Folsom Prison since writing “Folsom Prison Blues” back in 1955.

Johnny Cash had a couple years in the mid 1960’s where he wasn’t having much commercial success and he was suffering during that time from drug abuse problems. He was looking to make a comeback. He performed two concerts on January 13,1968 and took thirteen songs from the first concert and two from the second for the album which was a huge hit. I am not a great fan of live albums but “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” is a classic. By 2003 it was triple platinum.
