Super Bowl III- Jets Shock The World – This Day 1969

Super Bowl III- ” We’re going to win this game.I guarantee it” -Joe Willie Namath.

This is the first Super Bowl that I can clearly remember watching from start to finish and I haven’t missed a Super Bowl since. This wasn’t a great game. I have seen a replay of this game a few years ago. The game wasn’t that great but it was one of the most important games in the history of the National Football League. The Super Bowl had started between the NFL and AFL in 1967. No one took the upstart AFL much of a chance to win. The NFL was the established league. No one thought that AFL could compete with the mighty NFL teams. There was no interleague play at this time. It was thought that every year the NFL would win.

The Baltimore Colts were during the 1968 season a powerhouse. They were 13-1 during the season and disposed of the Cleveland Browns 34-0 in the NFL Championship Game. During the season the Colts gave up a record tying low of 144 points in 14 games. The Colts went into the game favoured by 19 points.

The Jets were 11-3 and beat the Oakland Raider in the AFL Championship Game. No one may have given the Jets a chance in the Super Bowl but the Jets did have confidence in themselves and they believed they were going to win. A few nights before the game Jets Quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed the victory.

Namath didn’t have a great statistical game. He passed for 206 yards and had no touchdowns. He did manage the game superbly, running back Matt Snell ran for 121 yards and a touchdown and the Jets defense was awesome. The Colts could never get anything going. It was 16-0 in the 4th quarter before the Colts scored. Final score 16-7. The Jets had shocked the world.  The next season the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL would beat Minnesota in another upset. Super Bowl III helped to make the Super Bowl what it is today-the greatest sporting event in America.

This game would also make Joe Namath. He is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame because of this game. He will always be remembered for this game and his guarantee that the Jets would win.
