See adjacent text.

On this day in 1963 Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” was exhibited in the United States for the first time at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It is believed that da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa sometime between 1503 and 1506. The painting is thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. The painting is currently located in the Louvre in Paris where it is one of the Louvre’s most popular attractions. The Mona Lisa was valued at $100 million in 1962, with inflation that would make it worth $720 million today.
