On this day in 1999 the impeachment trial for President William Jefferson Clinton began in the United States Senate. He was the second POTUS to be impeached. The other impeached POTUS was Andrew Johnson. Clinton was impeached due to allegations that he lied about his relationship with a 22 year old White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The twenty-one day trial would end on February 12, 1999. The final vote was 55 not guilty/45 guilty on the perjury charge and 50 guilty/50 not guilty on obstruction of justice. A vote of two-thirds majority is needed to impeach and remove from office. The voting went by party lines for the most part. No Democrats voted guilty and only a handful of r\Republicans voted not guilty. Clinton would finish out his term as POTUS.
