The great Roger Miller was born on this day in 1936. Roger Miller is best remembered for his huge hit song “King Of The Road” which was a #1 hit on the country music chart in 1965 and was also a big crossover hit-reaching #4 on the pop charts. During the 1960’s Miller would have a dozen Top 40 hits on the Billboard Pop Chart and 31 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Country Charts.
Roger Miller was known for his novelty songs but he was also a great all around songwriter. Roger Miller recorded 19 albums during his career. His peak years in popularity were the 1960’s-early 1970’s. Roger Miller died in 1992 of lung cancer at the age of 56.
The three-CD box set “King of the Road” covers Miller’s career and is highly recommended. Excellent stuff.
I worked both country and adult contemporary stations and found “King of the Road” on both playlists for many years.
