Fontella Bass who had a #4 hit in 1965 “Rescue Me” has died at the age of 72 of complications from a heart attack 3 weeks ago. Fontella Bass had 3 Top 40 hits in her brief career the biggest being “Rescue Me” which the first time I heard it thought it was Aretha Franklin Queen of Soul. “Rescue Me” was the first hit for Chess Records since Chuck Berry. Fontella became disillusioned with the music business when she felt she didn’t received the royalties due her from Chess. Her health in recent years had been in decline after a series of strokes.
