Phil Spector famous record producer and nut case turns 73 today. A lot has been written on the bizzare side of Phil Spector. That side turned tragic when he killed a woman back in 2003 and his currently in prison convicted of second degree murder. A couple good books on Spector are “Tearing Down The Wall of Sound:The Rise and Fall of Phil Spector” and “He’s A Rebel:The Truth About Phil Spector-Rock And Roll’s Legendary Madman” by Mark Ribowsky.
Phil Spector from 1960-1965 was THE record producer. He produced 25 top 40 songs during that period mostly with girl-groups. His production was called “The Wall of Sound” The producer was the story. The Ronettes, The Crystals, Darlene Love, Bob B. Soxx And the Blue Jeans were some of the groups he produced hits for in the early days. Later on he would work with biggest talents like The Rightous Brothers, he produced The Beatles “Let It Be” Leonard Cohen and The Ramones. Phil Spector produced the Rightious Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin” was the most played song on the radio in the 20th century.
Phil Spector was a ‘boy wonder” Most of his great work was done while he was in his early to mid-20’s. After that he lost focus/interest and became more reclusive. He has done little since the early 1970’s.
Phil considered his single with Ike and Tina Turner “River Deep-Mountain High” to be his greatest work but it only reached #88 on the charts.
Here is a list of his hit singles. There is a great box set out that covers most of this called “Back To Mono” which came out 20 years ago. One of the best box sets I’ve ever gotten.
