Musician Jay Farrar who was a founding member of the great Americana group Uncle Tupelo and then Son Volt turns 46 today. With Uncle Tupelo from 1987-1994 Farrar and Jeff Tweedy had a huge impact on the alternative country-american music scene. They may have not sold a ton of albums but they were very influential.
When Uncle Tupelo broke up my money would have been on Farrar to have the most successful career of the two- and his first album fronting his new group Son Volt “Trace” was a masterpiece. Since “Trace” Farrar has released a number of Son Volt and solo albums but to my ears nothing has come close to “Trace” Meanwhile Jeff Tweedy and his group Wilco have gone on to much greater critical and sales success.
During their time together in Uncle Tupelo, Uncle Tupedo released four groundbreaking albums. All of which I would highly recommend.
