On this day in 1971 the longest game ever played in NFL took place. A playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City at Kansas City. This was back when regular season games ended in ties so there hadn’t been many overtime games. This game was an exciting one. 12 future Hall of Famers would play in this game but it would be best remembered for the game Chief running back Ed Podolak had. Podolak set a playoff-record of 350 total yards, 85 rushing, 110 receiving and 155 on returns. I also remember it for announcer Curt Gowdy calling the overtime “Sudden Victory” instead of “Sudden Death” I kind of wish that had caught on. The game lasted halfway into the second overtime- 82 minutes and 40 seconds and was won by a Garo Yepremian 37 yard field goal.
