Sometimes big events start with an ordinary person. On this day in 2010 a Tunisian street vendor called Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest of the confiscation of his wares and the harassment and humiliation that he reported was inflicted on him by a municipal official and her aides. His act set off the Tunisian Revolution and eventually the Arab Spring. Domonstations and riots began throughout Tunisia in protest of social and political issues in the country. After Bouazizi’s death on January 4th, 2011 the public’s anger and violence intensified and Tunisia’s President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was forced to step down after 23 years in power. To think Bouazizi who gave up his life and never knew the chnage he had triggered. One little man who changed the world.
