William “The Refrigerator” Perry turns 50 today. “The Fridge” was a rookie sensation for the Chicago Bears in their Super Bowl Championship season. He was a defensive tackle who Bears coach Mike Ditka would use as a running back on short yardage and goal line situations. Perry was 6’2″ 335 pounds. He was a first round pick by the Bears out of Clemson.
Perry scored 3 touchdowns during that 1985 season, two rushing and one on a pass reception. He even scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl. The great Walter Payton should have gotten the opportunity to carry the ball in but Ditka wanted to look like a genius and let Perry get his touchdown. His Super Bowl ring is the biggest of anyone in the history of the event. His rings size was 25. The average male has a ring size of 10-12. After his rookie season he was just another player-all the hype was over.
Perry would play ten years in the NFL. He would battle weight problems. In recent years he has battled a number of health problems.
