1945 Heisman Trophy Winner Doc Blanchard AKA “Mr. Inside” Born This Day 1924.

 

On this day in 1924 the 1945 Heisman Trophy winner Doc Blanchard was born. Doc Blanchard would be a 3 time All-American Fullback-Linebacker at Army from 1944-46. During those three years Army won three National Championships. In 1945 Blanchard became the first junior to win the Heisman Trophy. That year he also won the Maxwell Award and the Sullivan Award for outstanding amateur athlete. Doc was also the placekicker and punter for Army. In 1946 his backfield teammated Glenn Davis would win the Heisman. Blanchard was billed as “Mr. Inside” Davis was “Mr. Outside.” Doc Blanchard would serve in the United States Air Force from 1947 until his retirement in 1971 as a Colonel. He had been drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the third pick in the first round of the 1946 draft but chose a career in the military after being turned down for a furlough. He became a fighter pilot. Blanchard died in 2009 at the age of 84. In the year of his death Army retired his #35. At the time of his death he was the oldest living former Heisman Trophy winner.
