I have not done too well on my predictions here it seems. But I will absolutely own what I put down on the blog – so in the interest of seeing how I did this year lets review.
One thing that just came out of nowhere – Johnny Manziel. I do not remember being able to get odds on Johnny Football to win the Heisman. I doubt that any freshman (redshirt or not) has ever been listed by the oddsmakers to win the award. The longest odds I can remember seeing on anything bordering on the not happening was James “Buster” Douglas being 42-1 against Mike Tyson back in February of 1990. Congratulations to Johnny Manziel for one of the more improbable things to happen this season.
I will post my predicted order of finish with actual finish in parenthesis behind the prediction and assign points. Hopefully we did well.
ACC – North Carolina and Miami were ineligible for post season play
Atlantic Division
Florida State (1)
Clemson (2)
Wake Forest (4)
NC State (3)
Boston College (6)
Maryland (5)
2 out of 6 here. Nailed FSU and Clemson. I think anyone that played QB at Maryland ended up injured.
Coastal
Virginia Tech (4)
Georgia Tech (3)
North Carolina (1)
Virginia (6)
Miami (2)
Duke (5)
0-6 Uh Oh. VT crashed and burned. NC and Miami played well despite no chance at post season.
I had picked VT and FSU in the title game with VT winning. Nope. FSU over Georgia Tech. Looks like we are not starting off well.
Big XII
Oklahoma (2)
West Virginia (8)
Texas (3)
TCU (6)
Oklahoma State (4)
Texas Tech (7)
Kansas State (1)
Baylor (5)
Iowa State (9)
Kansas (10)
3 of 10. Kansas State came out of nowhere and controlled their own destiny until a collapse against Baylor. 9 of 10 teams bowl eligible. Good season for the big XII overall.
I had OU winning outright – that honor goes to the Wildcats of KState.
Big East
Louisville (1)
South Florida (8)
Rutgers (3)
Pitt (5)
Cincinnati (2)
Temple (6)
Syracuse (4)
Connecticut (7)
3 of 8 – but we had Louisville winning the conference. South Florida was a train wreck. Pitt’s highlight was taking Notre Dame to overtime.
Big Ten – Ohio State and Penn State were ineligible
Leaders
Wisconsin (3)
Ohio State (1)
Illinois (6)
Purdue (4)
Penn State (2)
Indiana (5)
This comes with an asterisk. 1 of 6, but I did predict that Wisconsin would be playing in the title game. Urban Meyer was as advertised in Columbus. Penn St was a surprise.
Legends
Nebraska (1)
Michigan (2)
Michigan State (4)
Iowa (5)
Northwestern (3)
Minnesota (6)
3 of 6. I did have the title game exact Wisconsin and Nebraska, unfortunately I also thought that a ranked Husker team would actually SHOW UP to play the game. But no they were housed by the Badgers.
PAC 12
North
Oregon (2)
Stanford (1)
Washington (4)
California (5)
Washington State (6)
Oregon State (3)
oh noes. 0 for 6. Stanford did not miss Andrew Luck. Oregon State had a really good year.
South
USC (2)
Utah (5)
UCLA (1)
Arizona (4)
Arizona State (3)
Colorado (6)
2 of 6 – though one should not count. Colorado was just awful. USC imploded.
I had Oregon USC title game. Stanford and UCLA had that honor.
Independents
I thought Notre Dame would have a mediocre season. They are in the title game. They had some fortunate bounces along the way, but that happens. They beat everyone on their schedule.
SEC
East
Georgia (1)
South Carolina (3)
Florida (2)
Missouri (5)
Vanderbilt (4)
Tennessee (6)
Kentucky (7)
3 of 7. Florida was a bit of a surprise, they won ugly at times, but they won.
West
Alabama (1)
LSU (2)
Arkansas (6)
Texas A&M (3)
Mississippi State (4)
Auburn (7)
Mississippi (5)
2 of 7. Some surprises here. A&M did well in its first SEC campaign. Arkansas was a motorcycle wreck, err had a bad season. I had the title game participants correct, but I failed to mention who I thought would win.
Other Conferences
C-USA – I predicted Tulsa vs So Miss title game with Tulsa winning the conference – Tulsa was there and won.
MAC – I predicted Ohio and Northern Illinois with Northern Illinois winning the conference – Northern Illinois was there and won.
Mountain West – I predicted Boise State and the Broncos won the conference
Sun Belt – I predicted Arkansas State to win the conference and they did.
WAC – I predicted Louisiana Tech to win the conference and Utah State was the conference champion.
Overall I do not think I was too bad here. Had some winners and some not even close. I am not quitting my day job anytime soon, but I think I have earned a chance to make some more predictions.
