On this day in 1831 former President John Quincy Adams took his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He would serve 8 terms in Congress from his election until his death in 1848. He was the first former POTUS to serve in Congress after his presidency. Andrew Johnson would serve in the Senate after his presidency. Adams big issue in his service in Congress was his fight against slavery. He would die in the U.S. Capitol Building. He suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage and died in the Speaker’s Room in the U.S. Capitol. Adams spent his life serving his country. He was in a lot of ways a man before his time. His presidency was a nightmare but he is considered by the experts to be the finest Secretary of State in the nations history. A great American but a failed POTUS. It happens.
