On this day in 1956 the Million Dollar Quartet got together at Sam Phillips famous Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee for the first and last time. The Million Dollar Quartet was Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.
This jam session happened by pure chance. Perkins was in the studio recording, Jerry Lee was playing piano for this recording. He was at the time unknown outside of Memphis. Elvis who by this time had left Sun Records and was a big star back home and he stopped in. Later Johnny Cash drops by. These boys start playing and Cowboy Jack Clement who was engineering that day began recording them. Years later the tape would be released on albums. They did 46 songs that day. There is some question on how long Johnny Cash was even there, his voice does not appear on any of the recordings.

What an amazing line-up. A promoter’s dream.
