Pitchers Mound Lowered In Baseball-This Day 1968

Pitcher's Mound History

On this day in 1968 Major League Baseball made a rule change that had a big impact on the game. The pitchers mound was lowered from 15 inches to 10 inches in an attempt to increase scoring. This was a reaction to the 1968 season aka The Year of The Pitcher.”  Bob Gibson had a record 1.12 ERA in ’68, Denny McLain won 31 games, Don Drysdale pitched 6 consecutive shutouts and had a record streak of 58 straight innings without giving up a run. They needed more offense in the game and this rule change would help to bring it.
